Writing Diary – 4th June

Things have been a bit quiet on the writing front recently. As referenced before, writing 4,000 words a day and finishing late was not particularly conducive to then spending time picking up the laptop and starting again. It’s taken me about a week to get back into the swing of things and I have now passed the 9,000 word mark.

As I am halfway through my second season with Grantham, I estimate that I probably have another 9,000 to go but could still be on track for a late July finish.

It’s been quite fun digging up memories of dubious decisions, outrageous yellow cards and unusual hat-tricks. Here’s a teaser – closing paragraphy for today’s stint:

A massively different game followed two weeks later when we were back in action against eventual champions Rolls Royce. We started strongly, as we so often do, but Rolls Royce absorbed our attacks and hit two goals to blunt our optimism. David Nix had a chance to pull one back but shot wide, and that was about as good as it got, although there were further chances for us to score – none were taken.

“Rolls Royce threatened each time they attacked but Grantham still caused them problems with constant interchanging of positions although further shots from Nix, Tim Mihill and captain Simon Higgs either went wide or were well saved by the Rolls Royce goalkeeper.

“Grantham stopper Andy Barton was powerless to prevent the well-drilled away team adding goals almost at will but stepped in on occasion to prove that the home side were up for the fight.”

Up for the fight we certainly were but up to the standard of competing with Rolls Royce we weren’t. Mini Metros were more like it.
